BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. It is a simple formula, used for decades as a general indicator at the population level.
BMI does not distinguish between muscle mass and body fat. A highly trained person with a lot of muscle mass can have a “high” BMI without having excess fat. Therefore, BMI is useful as a starting point, not a final verdict.
If you want a more complete picture, combine BMI with a calculation of calorie and macronutrient requirements adapted to your goal — not just a single number.
